The air in the Maseka palace, usually alive with the hum of royal life, had grown thick and heavy, like the oppressive heat before a storm. Whispers, once confined to the shadowed corners of the court, now slithered through the gilded halls, each one a venomous dart aimed at my heart. My secret, the most precious and perilous thing I possessed, was no longer mine alone. It had been ripped from my chest and paraded before the Maseka King, my father, and his entire court.

It began with a rumour, a sly insinuation that found its way to the King’s ear, concerning my frequent, unexplained absences. My father, ever vigilant, had ordered an investigation. My guards, loyal but easily swayed by the promise of favour or the fear of reprisal, had not been as discreet as I had hoped. They had followed me, seen me slip away into the twilight, seen me meet *her*. The shame of their discovery was a cold knot in my stomach, but it was nothing compared to the dread of what they had reported.

The summons to my father’s chambers was swift, the summons delivered by a grim-faced captain of the guard. His eyes, usually filled with a gruff respect, now held a flicker of something akin to pity, or perhaps, disgust. I walked the familiar path, my heart a frantic bird trapped in my ribs, each beat a desperate plea for denial, for ignorance. But I knew, deep down, that ignorance was no longer an option.
