The air in the Maseka palace was thick with the scent of sandalwood and the unspoken weight of duty. I, Prince Tafara, moved through its gilded halls like a ghost, my heart a restless bird beating against the cage of my ribs. Each polished stone underfoot seemed to echo the whispers I tried to drown out, the murmurs of my court, the watchful eyes of my father’s advisors. They spoke of alliances, of trade routes, of the ever-present tension with the Hungwe kingdom, but their words were a distant hum, a dull ache against the vibrant melody of Tariro’s laughter that played constantly in my mind.

My days were a performance, a carefully orchestrated dance of princely decorum. I attended council meetings, reviewed troop placements, and even managed a strained smile for visiting dignitaries, all while my thoughts drifted to the cool shade of the forest, to the gentle curve of Tariro’s cheek, to the way her eyes, the color of rich earth after a rain, sparkled when she spoke of her dreams. The stolen moments by the Whispering Waters had become the sun around which my world revolved, and now that sun was in danger of being eclipsed.

The unease had begun subtly, like a faint tremor beneath the earth. A sideways glance from Elder Kaelen, his usually benevolent gaze now holding a flicker of something sharp and calculating. A hushed conversation that ceased abruptly when I entered a room. I’d dismissed it at first, attributing it to the inherent paranoia that clung to any royal court, especially one so close to a rival. But the feeling persisted, a prickle of unease on the back of my neck.
