The weight of two crowns pressed down on my chest, a crushing burden that left me breathless. Not the literal weight of gold and jewels, but the invisible, suffocating pressure of my birthright, of my kingdom, of my father’s expectations. And beside me, her hand trembling in mine, I could feel the same weight settling upon Tariro, though her crown was one of thorns, woven from the fierce loyalty she owed her own people, her own family.

We stood in the grand hall of Maseka, not as lovers stealing stolen moments in the dappled sunlight of the forest, but as subjects summoned before their rulers. My father, the Maseka King, sat upon his throne, his face a mask of stern authority, his eyes, usually warm when they looked upon me, now held a flinty glint of disapproval. Across from him, on a raised dais that seemed to mock our shared space, sat the Hungwe Queen, her regal bearing as sharp and unyielding as the spears of her warriors. Her gaze, when it fell upon Tariro, was a mixture of suspicion and something akin to contempt.

The air crackled with unspoken accusations, with the venom of generations of animosity between our kingdoms. The betrayal that had driven Tariro into hiding, the subsequent desperate search that had consumed my every waking thought, had all culminated in this moment. We had found each other, yes, reborn from the ashes of our separation, but the world we had sought to return to was now a battlefield, and we were its unwilling pawns.
