The roughspun cloak scratched against my skin, a constant, irritating reminder of my new reality. It wasn’t the silk of my royal robes, nor the sturdy leather of hunting attire, but something coarse and nondescript, designed to blend into the shadows. My father’s guards, their faces etched with a mixture of concern and duty, had been a formidable obstacle, but my resolve, fueled by the gnawing emptiness where Tariro’s laughter used to be, had proven stronger. Every snap of a twig, every hoot of an owl, sent a jolt of adrenaline through me. I imagined the King’s men, their hounds baying, their eyes scanning the undergrowth for any sign of their runaway prince. The thought spurred me onward, my boots crunching on the forest floor, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
