The air in the woods always held a certain hush, a quiet reverence that descended as soon as the last of the paved road dissolved into a carpet of fallen leaves and pine needles. It was a silence that spoke volumes, filled with the rustle of unseen creatures and the sigh of the wind through ancient branches. Today, though, the silence felt different, heavier, as if the very trees were holding their breath. Old Man Roney’s voice, a low rumble like distant thunder, broke through the stillness, each word carefully placed, like stones on a forest path.

“This here,” he began, his gnarled finger pointing towards a particularly dense thicket of alder, “this patch of woods… it’s got more stories than you’ve got hairs on your head, Troy. More than most folks have in their whole lives.”

I followed his gaze, my own eyes scanning the tangled undergrowth. I’d spent countless hours in these woods, exploring, hunting, just breathing in the peace. But Roney saw things differently. He saw the whispers of the past clinging to every moss-covered stone, every gnarled root.
