The Keeper of Lore
Troy seeks advice from Old Man Roney, a local elder known for his wisdom and knowledge of the woods. Roney, initially gruff, listens intently as Troy describes the truck, a flicker of recognition in his eyes.
The air in the woods always felt different, thicker somehow, as if it held the breath of generations of trees. Sunlight dappled through the canopy in shifting patterns, painting the forest floor with a mosaic of light and shadow. It was a place where time seemed to stretch and bend, and where secrets, like fallen leaves, lay undisturbed for years. Today, however, my own secret pulsed with an urgency that made the familiar woods feel charged with a new kind of energy. I was heading to Old Man Roney’s cabin, a place that felt as ancient as the gnarled oaks surrounding it.
Roney’s cabin wasn't on any map, not one you’d find in a gas station convenience store, anyway. It was more of a landmark passed down through hushed conversations, a place you found by knowing where to look, or by being led there by someone who did. I’d heard about him my whole life – the keeper of lore, the man who knew the woods better than anyone, who could tell you the history of a creek bed or the whisper of a wind through a particular stand of pines. He was a man as weathered and sturdy as the timber of his home, his face a roadmap of a life lived outdoors.
As I approached, the scent of woodsmoke, sharp and comforting, reached me before I saw the cabin itself. It was small, tucked against a rise, its logs darkened by time and the elements. A thin plume of smoke curled lazily from its stone chimney, a silent greeting. I knocked, the sound muffled by the thick wood. A moment later, the door creaked open, revealing Old Man Roney.
