The late afternoon sun, already beginning its descent towards the western hills, cast long, lazy shadows across Troy’s yard. Dust motes danced in the golden shafts of light as he wrestled with a stubborn bolt on the Ford’s frame, his knuckles scraped raw and his brow slick with sweat. The air hummed with the distant drone of cicadas, a sound that always felt like the heartbeat of summer itself. He’d spent the morning clearing more brush from around the truck, revealing more of its proud, forgotten lines beneath the tangle of vines and fallen leaves. It was a slow, painstaking process, each branch and weed a small victory, each glimpse of intact metal a renewed surge of hope.

He was so lost in the rhythm of his work, the satisfying scrape of metal on metal, the grunt of exertion, that he didn’t hear the crunch of gravel approaching until a voice, clear and with a hint of amusement, cut through the quiet.

“Troy? You out here communing with nature, or just wrestling with another one of your… projects?”
