Chapter 16
A Glimpse of the Past
While cleaning the cab, Troy discovers an old photograph tucked away. It depicts a smiling family with a truck that looks remarkably like his F150, hinting at its former life.
The air inside the cab of the ’50 Ford F150 was thick with the scent of decaying upholstery and the ghosts of countless journeys. Sunlight, dappled and hesitant, filtered through the grimy windshield, illuminating motes of dust dancing in the stillness. Troy, his hands still bearing the faint metallic tang of grease and primer, ran a soft cloth over the cracked leather of the driver's seat. Each sweep was a gentle caress, a way of coaxing secrets from the silence. He’d spent weeks coaxing the truck’s heart back to life, wrestling with stubborn bolts and whispering encouragement to reluctant pistons. Now, the bodywork was nearing completion, a symphony of gleaming primer and expertly smoothed metal. But it was the interior, the intimate space where a driver and their passengers shared moments, that held a different kind of allure.
He pushed aside a flap of the torn headliner, a faded fabric that smelled faintly of old cigarettes and pine needles. Beneath it, tucked deep into a crevice where the roof met the dashboard, his fingers brushed against something stiff and unexpected. It wasn’t just dust or a stray leaf. With a delicate pull, he extracted it. A photograph.
It was old, the edges softened and yellowed with time, the surface bearing the faint crisscross of a thousand tiny scratches. Yet, the image itself was surprisingly clear. A family. A man, his arm slung around a woman with a kind smile, their eyes crinkling at the corners. Beside them, two children, a boy and a girl, beaming with an uninhibited joy that seemed to radiate from the sepia tones. And in front of them, parked proudly on a gravel path, sat a truck. A truck that made Troy’s breath catch in his throat.
