The old man’s boots crunched on the gravel path, a familiar sound that always signaled a visit. I was elbow-deep in grease, wrestling with a stubborn carburetor bolt on the F150, the late afternoon sun slanting through the open garage door, painting stripes of gold across the dusty floor. Old Man Roney stood there, silhouetted against the light, his weathered hands clasped behind his back. He didn't say anything at first, just watched me work, his eyes, sharp as ever despite their age, taking in every detail.
"Still at it, eh, Troy?" he finally rumbled, his voice like stones tumbling down a hillside.
I grunted, twisting the wrench with a little more force. "Someone's gotta be, Roney. This old girl ain't gonna fix herself."
