Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Michael is caught at gunpoint by the scarred man and the sergeant. They beat him and lock him in the back room with Rita. Loc arrives and reveals the boat is coming early—they're moving out within the hour, not midnight. Michael frees Rita's wrists and they escape through a rotten wall panel into the river. They swim downstream and pull themselves onto a fuel barge, but Michael hears Loc's men searching the bank. He and Rita are alive but stranded, wet, and unarmed on the river in the dark with no way to call for help.

Michael raised his hands slowly. The back room was tight. Four people, no windows, one door. The air tasted like mildew and old rope. Behind him, Rita's breathing had gone shallow and fast.
