Chapter 15
Michael, Rita, and Ron's boat motor fails as a spotlight approaches. They paddle into mangroves and hide. Ron insists on staying behind to fix the motor while Michael and Rita go ashore through the swamp. They cross a swamp trail, find a clearing with a hut, and rest briefly. Ron reappears, having fixed and hidden the boat. They decide to run toward the village before Loc's men return. The stakes are raised as they become separated and vulnerable in the swamp, with limited time before pursuit resumes.
Michael dug the paddle into the water, the blade catching nothing but foam. Rita grabbed the other paddle and pulled hard, the boat lurching sideways. The spotlight from upstream swept wider, cutting a white arc across the river.
“Left side,” Michael said. “Both of you. Hard.”
Ron shoved his paddle against the boat’s hull and pushed, his boots scraping the bottom. The boat turned, slow and heavy, and the spotlight slid past them—close enough to see the ripples in its beam.
