The first light of dawn always found me there. It was a ritual, as ingrained as breathing, as necessary as the ache in my chest. Each morning, before the world fully stirred, before the birds dared to sing their cheerful, oblivious melodies, I was at the lake. The air, crisp and cool, carried the faint, damp scent of earth and water, a perfume that had become inextricably linked with Penelope. And with her absence.

My hands, calloused from a life of work that now felt meaningless, would reach for the single, perfect purple tulip I carried. It was always purple. Always a tulip. Her favorites. A vibrant splash of color against the somber earth, a tiny rebellion against the overwhelming gray that had settled over my world. I’d kneel, the rough fabric of my jeans whispering against the damp grass, and gently place the bloom beside her marker. It was a small thing, this tulip. A whisper of my love in the vast silence.

Beside it, nestled amongst the blades of grass, lay the ring. Heavy, cold, its diamonds glinting dully even in the pre-dawn gloom. It was a monument to a future that would never be, a promise swallowed by the abyss. My proposal. My excessive, foolishly hopeful proposal, meant for a night that had dissolved into a nightmare. Now, it was simply a piece of metal, a cruel jest of fate, resting where her hand would never reach.
