Chapter 11

Episode 11

They make a new bigger cave

3 min read

The last rays of the setting sun, molten gold and rose, painted the sky as the dragon family surveyed their current dwelling. It was a cozy nook, a testament to their resourcefulness, carved into the mountainside. But the hatchlings, now a boisterous gaggle of scaled youngsters, were growing. Their playful tumbles and enthusiastic wing-stretches were beginning to feel cramped within its familiar confines. Mother Dragon, her great golden eyes soft with affection, nudged a particularly energetic youngster with her snout. He yipped, a sound like pebbles skittering, and tried to puff out his chest, a valiant but tiny display of burgeoning power. Father Dragon, his obsidian scales shimmering in the twilight, rumbled a low note of agreement. Their family was thriving, expanding, and their home needed to expand with them.

The search began the next morning. It was a grand expedition, the entire family venturing out. Mother Dragon led the way, her senses attuned to the subtle shifts in the earth, the whispers of the wind. Father Dragon followed, his keen eyes scanning the distant peaks and shadowed valleys. The hatchlings, a kaleidoscope of nascent colors and boundless energy, tumbled and flapped behind, their excitement infectious. They explored the high ridges where the air was thin and the world stretched out below like a rumpled tapestry of green and blue. They delved into sheltered ravines, where ancient trees formed cathedral-like canopies, their roots delving deep into the secrets of the soil.

It was in a vast, forgotten caldera, a place where volcanic activity had long since cooled, that Mother Dragon found it. A colossal cavern, its entrance a gaping maw framed by obsidian rock, beckoned. The air within was still and cool, carrying the faint scent of minerals and deep earth. It was immense, far larger than their current home, with vaulted ceilings that disappeared into shadow and nooks and crannies that promised endless exploration. Father Dragon, after a thorough inspection, gave a low, approving growl. There were natural ledges for sleeping, a gently sloping floor that would be easy to navigate, and best of all, a source of pure, cool water that trickled from a fissure in the far wall, forming a small, clear pool.
