The Shadowed Nest

A peaceful dragon family's world is shattered when a dark force encroaches, threatening their young hatchlings and forcing the mother dragon to make a desperate choice.

The air in the Sky-Peak area was thick with the scent of sun-warmed stone and the sweet, earthy aroma of the moss that carpeted their nesting ledge Stella , the mother dragon, stretched her magnificent wings, scales shimmering like a thousand embers in the afternoon light. Below her, nestled in a woven bed of dried mountain herbs, her 10 hatchlings chirped, their downy fuzz still clinging to their nascent wings. Little Ember, the boldest, nudged his siblings, his tiny snout bumping against his brother, Cinder, who let out a sleepy squeak. The third, Ash, a shyling, burrowed deeper into the warmth of his siblings. Ignis watched them with a love as vast and deep as the sky itself, a fierce protectiveness coiling in her gut. Her mate, Sol, a dragon of midnight scales and starlight eyes, was out hunting, his powerful silhouette a familiar, comforting sight against the distant, snow-capped peaks.

A shadow fell, not from a passing cloud, but from something far more insidious. It crept across the ledge, chilling the air and silencing the happy chirps of the hatchlings. Ignis’s head snapped up, her golden eyes narrowing. A prickle of unease, sharp and unwelcome, ran down her spine. The wind, which moments before had carried the scent of pine and rain, now carried a faint, acrid tang, like burnt metal and death.

She unfolded her wings, a rustle of leathery membrane that echoed in the sudden silence. The hatchlings, sensing her alarm, huddled together, their tiny hearts thrumming against each other. Ignis lowered her head, nudging them gently with her snout. "Stay close, my little flames," she rumbled, her voice a low, resonant hum designed to soothe. But her own calm was a fragile thing, fraying at the edges.

The shadow grew, coalescing into a form that clung to the cliff face, a thing of twisted limbs and eyes that burned with a malevolent green light. It moved with an unnatural fluidity, its claws scraping against the rock, leaving trails of sickly, black ichor. Ignis had never seen its like, but instinct, ancient and primal, screamed danger. This was not a predator of the mountains, not a rival dragon, not a griffon or a wyvern. This was something… other. Something that reeked of the deep, forgotten places, of malice born in the dark.

A guttural hiss escaped the creature, a sound that vibrated in Ignis’s very bones. It was reaching for her nest. Her hatchlings, her precious, vulnerable brood. A roar, raw and primal, tore from Ignis’s throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated fury. She lunged forward, her massive body a shield between the encroaching darkness and her young. The air crackled with her power, the latent heat within her stirring, ready to erupt. But the creature was fast, impossibly fast, its form blurring as it scrambled closer. Ignis knew, with a chilling certainty, that she could not defend them here. Not on this ledge, exposed and vulnerable. A desperate choice, a terrifying gamble, began to form in the fiery depths of her mind.
