The silence of the house, once a comforting blanket, had begun to fray at the edges. It was a silence that pressed in, heavy and expectant, punctuated by sounds that were too deliberate, too close. My sleep, or what little of it I managed, was no longer a refuge. It was a battlefield. The nightmares, which I had always dismissed as mere figments of an overactive imagination, had taken on a new, terrifying lucidity. They were no longer amorphous anxieties; they were vivid, brutal replays of Eleanor’s words, painted with the chilling realism of my own burgeoning dread.

I would find myself in the dusty attic, the same stifling air that had choked Eleanor filling my lungs. The shadows would writhe, coalescing into shapes that whispered her name, her despair, her terror. Then, the familiar chill would seep into my bones, the sensation of being watched, of something ancient and hungry stirring just beyond the veil of my perception. I’d wake with a gasp, heart hammering against my ribs, the phantom touch of icy fingers still lingering on my skin. The sheets would be slick with sweat, the room dark and oppressive, the silence outside my immediate terror amplified by the memory of the screams I’d heard in my dreams.

These nocturnal assaults bled into my waking hours. Every creak of the floorboards was a footstep. Every gust of wind rattling the ancient panes was a breath against my ear. The play of light and shadow cast by the gnarled branches of the oak outside my bedroom window transformed familiar corners into lurking threats. I found myself jumping at my own reflection, a gaunt stranger with eyes that darted and widened with a constant, low hum of anxiety. The resilience I’d prided myself on was eroding, chipped away by an unseen force that seemed to delight in my unraveling.
