Chapter 5
A Hidden Discovery
While exploring a dusty attic, Alex stumbles upon a locked chest. Inside, a leather-bound journal. The pages are filled with elegant, increasingly frantic script, detailing the experiences of a previous occupant, Eleanor Vance.
The attic air hung thick and still, a testament to years of undisturbed dust. Each step I took sent motes dancing in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom from a grimy dormer window. It smelled of forgotten things, of brittle paper and dried wood, a scent that was both musty and strangely invigorating. I’d spent the better part of the morning up here, driven by a restless curiosity that had taken root the moment I first stepped over the threshold of this peculiar house. My fingers, coated in a fine grey powder, traced the rough-hewn beams overhead. Cobwebs, thick as spun sugar, draped themselves like macabre decorations. I wasn't searching for anything in particular, just letting the space speak to me, letting the silence seep into my bones. It was in a shadowed corner, tucked behind a stack of warped hatboxes, that I found it. A chest. Not large, but heavy, fashioned from dark, aged wood, its metal fittings tarnished to a dull, coppery hue. A lock, ornate and stubbornly fused with rust, secured its secrets.
For a moment, I simply stood, a prickle of anticipation crawling up my spine. This felt like a turning point, a tangible piece of the past waiting to be unearthed. My initial skepticism, the rational part of my mind that attributed the strange occurrences to the house settling or an overactive imagination, began to recede, replaced by a burgeoning sense of purpose. I rummaged through a nearby pile of discarded tools, my heart thumping a little faster. A sturdy, old-fashioned crowbar, its handle smooth from use, seemed to be the answer.
