The chipped mug, the one with the faded bluebirds, sat on the kitchen counter. I distinctly remembered leaving it by the sink, half-full of lukewarm tea, after my late-night reading session. Now, it was perched precariously on the edge of the oak table, as if someone had placed it there in a hurry, or perhaps, with a careless flick of a wrist. My breath hitched. This was no mere oversight. I’d been meticulous, a creature of habit in my new, solitary domain. OCD, my therapist had once called it, a gentle prod at my need for order. But order was precisely what was beginning to fray at the edges.

I walked over to the table, my footsteps unnervingly loud in the otherwise silent house. The mug didn’t budge. It was solid, real, yet entirely out of place. I picked it up, the ceramic cool against my fingertips, and carried it back to the sink. As I rinsed it, my gaze drifted to the window above, the one that overlooked the overgrown rose bushes, their thorns like skeletal fingers reaching out to the glass. Was it my imagination, or did a shadow flicker there, a fleeting darkness against the pale afternoon light? I shook my head. It was the light, playing tricks. It had to be.

Later that day, I found myself drawn to the study, the room that felt perpetually colder than the rest of the house. Mr. Abernathy had called it the “library” during the viewing, a word that now seemed far too grand for the dusty shelves and the lone, imposing armchair that sat like a sentinel in the center. The air in here was different, heavier, as if it carried the weight of unspoken things. I’d tried to ignore it, to chalk it up to poor ventilation, to the sheer age of the place. But today, the chill was more pronounced, a biting cold that seeped into my bones despite the mild autumn weather outside.
