The ink, Eleanor’s ink, felt like a brand against my fingertips, a tangible link to a mind unraveling just as mine threatened to. Her final entries, scrawled in a frantic, almost illegible hand, spoke of a void, a hungry emptiness that resided in the very bones of the house. It wasn’t a ghost, not in the traditional sense, but something far older, far more insidious. It fed on doubt, on terror, on the slow erosion of self. And her weakness, the one she’d clung to in her final, desperate moments – it was the light. Not just the physical absence of it, but the metaphorical light of unwavering belief, of a spirit unbent.

And that was my weapon. My only weapon.

The house seemed to hold its breath. The usual creaks and groans, the phantom rustles, had ceased. A heavy silence had descended, thick and suffocating, the kind that precedes a storm. I sat in the living room, the journal spread open on the worn rug, the faint scent of aged paper and something else, something metallic and faintly sweet, clinging to the air. The candelabra, a relic from some forgotten era, stood on the mantelpiece, its brass dulled by time. I had filled it with new candles, thick and white, their wicks waiting patiently.
