The air in the study was thick, not with dust or the scent of old paper, but with a palpable, suffocating dread. It clung to my skin like a shroud, each breath a struggle against an unseen weight. I clutched Eleanor’s journal, its brittle pages a lifeline in the encroaching darkness. The words I’d just read, her final, frantic scribblings, pulsed with a terror that was becoming all too familiar. She’d written of being trapped, of memories not her own flooding her mind, of a presence that fed on her despair. Now, it was happening to me.

It started subtly, a flicker at the edge of my vision, a fleeting scent of damp earth and decay that had no source. But then, the whispers began. Not the indistinct murmurs from the walls that had initially unnerved me, but distinct voices, laced with a chilling sorrow. They were fragmented, broken, like shards of glass reflecting a shattered life.

Suddenly, the room seemed to warp. The familiar oak desk, the overflowing bookshelves, the worn Persian rug – they dissolved, replaced by a scene bathed in the dim, flickering glow of gaslight. The air grew colder, carrying with it the acrid tang of fear. I stood in a room that was undeniably the same, yet utterly alien. The furniture was different, heavier, draped in the somber hues of a bygone era. A woman sat at a small writing desk, her back to me, her shoulders hunched with an agony that radiated outwards. Her hair, a cascade of dark curls, was pinned loosely, a few tendrils escaping to frame a pale, drawn face that I couldn't quite see.
