Each entry was a descent, a slow, agonizing unraveling that mirrored the creeping dread I’d been fighting for weeks. The journal, a testament to a mind consumed, was no longer just a historical document; it was a roadmap, a terrible prophecy.
I traced the faded ink of her last coherent entry: “It feeds on the quiet. On the doubt. It thrives in the spaces between breaths, in the moments when the mind wavers. I must find its anchor. Its source. Before it claims me entirely.”

Then it escalated, a cold breath on my neck, objects moved, whispers that slithered into my dreams. Now, it felt like a constant pressure, a weight on my very soul, a silent observer in every room. Mr. Abernathy’s dismissive wave at local gossip, his hurried sale of this isolated, decaying monument, suddenly felt less like pragmatism and more like a deliberate act of misdirection. He knew. He must have known.
