The air in the house had thinned, grown brittle, like a dried leaf on the verge of crumbling. It was no longer just a backdrop, a mere occupancy. It was a presence, an awareness that coiled around me, tightening its grip with each passing moment. The subtle shifts, the whispers that had once been easily dismissed as the groans of an old structure, now felt deliberate. They were directed, pointed, and most unnervingly, they were for me.

Sleep offered no refuge. My dreams, once a chaotic tapestry of my own anxieties, had begun to bleed into a singular, suffocating narrative. I was back in the house, but it was different. The shadows were deeper, the silence more profound, punctuated by a low, guttural hum that seemed to vibrate from the very foundations. And in the periphery, always just beyond the edge of my vision, a shape coalesced, a formless dread that promised oblivion. I would wake with a gasp, my heart a frantic drum against my ribs, the phantom touch of cold air lingering on my skin.

During the day, the house seemed to watch. I’d catch movement in my peripheral vision – a flicker of darkness in a doorway, a shadow detaching itself from the wall only to melt back into the gloom. The floorboards would creak when I was certain I was alone, the sigh of wind through the eaves would morph into a mournful lament that sounded eerily like a name being whispered. My name.
