The air in the town library felt thick, heavy with the scent of aging paper and forgotten stories. Mr. Abernathy had been vague, almost condescendingly so, when I’d pressed him about the house’s history. “Old houses have old stories, Alex,” he’d said with a tight smile, his eyes darting away from mine. “Nothing out of the ordinary.” But Eleanor’s journal, with its escalating terror and fragmented entries, screamed otherwise. The local historical society, a dusty room filled with brittle photographs and even brittler people, seemed the only place left to turn.
I found Mrs. Gable there, a woman whose silver hair was pulled back into a bun so severe it seemed to hold her entire face in a state of perpetual disapproval. She regarded me with the same suspicion she might reserve for a cockroach discovered in a particularly prized porcelain doll. “You’re the new owner of the old Vance place, aren’t you?” Her voice was a dry rustle, like dead leaves skittering across pavement.
“Yes, that’s me,” I replied, trying to project an air of casual curiosity, though my heart hammered against my ribs. “I’m trying to learn a bit about its history. It’s quite… unique.”
