Alex contacts Mr. Abernathy, the agent who sold the house. He's evasive, downplaying the rumors and offering vague reassurances. Alex suspects he knows more than he's letting on, a suspicion that deepens the isolation.
The phone felt alien in my hand, a smooth, modern rectangle against the rough, ancient wood of the desk. Mr. Abernathy’s number, scrawled in Eleanor’s neat, yet increasingly frantic, script on a torn page from her journal, seemed to hum with a desperate energy. It was the only lead I had, the only tangible connection to the outside world that might offer a sliver of understanding, or perhaps, a healthy dose of dismissal. I’d spent too long within these walls, the silence pressing in, the shadows deepening not just in the corners but in the very fabric of my thoughts. The journal had been a revelation, a descent into another’s madness that mirrored my own nascent anxieties, but it offered no solutions, only a chilling echo of my predicament.
My fingers trembled as I dialled. Each ring was a step further away from the oppressive solitude, a tentative reach into the normalcy I was rapidly losing grip on. A gruff, slightly impatient voice answered, "Abernathy speaking."
"Mr. Abernathy, it's Alex," I began, my voice cracking slightly. "The new owner of Blackwood Manor."
