My palms were sweating so much I thought I might leave damp handprints on the locker door. Mrs. Davison had announced the school dance with all the fanfare of a royal decree, and suddenly, the whole week had taken on this shimmering, terrifying aura. A school dance. With Penny. The thought alone made my stomach do flip-flops that would have impressed an Olympic gymnast. I’d spent the last few days replaying every conversation, every shared laugh, every time her eyes had met mine, trying to find a sign, any sign, that she might want to go with me. I saw her by her locker, her backpack slung over one shoulder, a bright pink notebook peeking out. Her friend, Maya, was chattering beside her, and Penny was laughing, her head tilted back just so. That laugh. It was like a melody, and it always made me feel… lighter. Happier. I took a deep breath, trying to channel that movie star version of myself. This was it. No more rehearsing, no more overthinking. Just do it.
