Project Complete, A New Beginning
They finish the project, a symbol of their growing bond. As the school day ends, a shared look and a whispered promise to hang out soon mark the transition from classmates to something more. Hope blooms for Sam.
The last sentence of our Shakespearean sonnet analysis was finally written, the ink a deep, confident black against the crisp white paper. It felt like a victory, not just for the project, but for us. For Penny and me. We’d stared at each other across the pages, then at our notes, then back at each other, a silent negotiation happening in the space between our words. And somewhere along the way, the awkwardness had dissolved, replaced by this easy rhythm, this comfortable understanding.
Mrs. Davison’s classroom was a symphony of rustling papers and hushed goodbyes as the final bell began its familiar, insistent peel. Sam packed his bag with a practiced efficiency, his movements still a little hesitant, like he was afraid to disturb the fragile peace we’d built. I watched him, a warmth spreading through my chest that had nothing to do with the late afternoon sun streaming through the windows.
“So,” I said, my voice a little softer than I intended. “We did it.”
