The fluorescent lights of the hallway hummed, a dull drone that usually faded into the background of my existence. But today, it felt like a spotlight, amplifying the awkward silence that had descended between Penny and me. We’d just finished a particularly productive study session at her house, the scent of her mom’s baking still lingering in the air, and now we were walking towards the school gates, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows.
