Chapter 7
The scent of stale cigarettes and something vaguely floral, like wilted lilies, clung to the air in his mother’s cramped apartment. It was a smell Malik hadn’t encountered in years, not since he’d deliberately severed ties, yet it flooded his senses the moment he stepped across the threshold. The door, a flimsy barrier between his present and his past, creaked shut behind him with a weary sigh. His mother, a spectral figure draped in a faded floral housecoat, stood by the chipped Formica counter, her eyes, once sharp and observant, now clouded with a perpetual, unfocused sadness.
“Malik,” she whispered, her voice raspy, barely audible above the drone of the ancient television in the living room. It was the same news anchor, the same grave pronouncements he remembered from his youth, a constant hum in the background of his childhood.
