The Unveiling
Trust blinds Malik. He walks into Chris's trap, the elaborate scheme unfolding with devastating precision. The realization of betrayal hits him, shattering his world.
The air in the dimly lit bar hung thick with the scent of stale beer and desperation, a familiar perfume to Malik. He nursed a lukewarm whiskey, the ice long since surrendered to the amber liquid, much like his own resolve had begun to melt. Across from him, Chris, ever the peacock, preened under the low hum of conversation, his laughter a little too loud, a little too forced. It had been weeks since their last “score,” a particularly clean sweep that had left Malik’s ledger looking healthier than it ever had. A nest egg, he’d called it in his mind, a golden parachute to a life he’d only dared to dream of.
“You’re quiet tonight, Mal,” Chris said, his voice smooth as polished chrome. He leaned forward, his eyes, usually so bright and full of mischief, seemed to hold a flicker of something else, something Malik couldn't quite decipher. Concern? Or was it just the reflection of the neon sign outside?
Malik shrugged, swirling the whiskey in his glass. “Just thinking.”
