The air in the sterile, rented office hung thick and heavy, a stagnant miasma of stale coffee and unspoken accusations. Sunlight, usually a welcome visitor, seemed to cower outside the grimy windows, reluctant to illuminate the scene unfolding within. Malik sat across a scarred, laminate desk from Chris, the silence between them a tangible entity, a chasm carved by a thousand whispered lies and one monumental truth. He’d known, deep down, for weeks. The subtle shifts in Chris’s demeanor, the evasiveness in his eyes, the way he’d brushed off Malik’s carefully laid plans for their future. But knowing and facing it were two different beasts entirely.

“You did it, didn’t you?” Malik’s voice was barely a whisper, a fragile thing threatening to shatter. It wasn’t a question, not really. It was a statement of a terrible, undeniable fact. The numbers on the screen of the laptop, a spreadsheet Malik himself had meticulously curated, spoke a language of absence, of evaporation. His nest egg, his escape route, his future – gone.

Chris leaned back in his chair, a practiced, almost casual gesture that grated on Malik’s raw nerves. He ran a hand through his perfectly coiffed hair, a nervous tic that had always been a tell, a tiny crack in his polished exterior. “Did what, Mal?” he asked, his tone deceptively light, a performance designed to deflect, to disarm.
