The air in the dimly lit bar hung thick with the smell of stale beer and desperation, a familiar perfume to Malik. He nursed a whiskey, the ice clinking a hollow rhythm against the glass, a counterpoint to the frantic beat of his own heart. Across from him, Chris, a shadow in the booth, shifted, his usual easy smile replaced by a tight-lipped tension that mirrored Malik’s own. They hadn’t spoken since the call, the one that had ripped through Malik’s carefully constructed peace like a wildfire. The silence between them was a chasm, filled only with the ghost of a thousand shared secrets and the burgeoning, chilling weight of one monumental betrayal.

“So, you gonna say something, Chris?” Malik’s voice was low, a rumble that barely disturbed the ambient noise. He didn’t look at Chris directly, his gaze fixed on the swirling amber liquid in his glass, as if the answers were hidden within its depths.

Chris finally met his eyes, a flicker of something unreadable – defiance? Regret? – passing through them. “What do you want me to say, Mal?” His voice was rough, stripped of its usual smooth cadence.
