The familiar scent of turpentine and linseed oil, a fragrance that had long been a comforting whisper in the background of her life, now rose with an almost startling clarity. It filled Carol’s small, sun-drenched studio, a space that had felt too quiet for too long. The easel stood sentinel, draped in a dust sheet, a silent testament to months, perhaps even a year, of neglect. But today, the dust sheet was gone, pulled away with a decisive tug that sent a small cloud spiraling into the light. Beneath it, the canvas waited, stark white and full of possibility.

Carol stood before it, her heart thrumming a hesitant, unfamiliar rhythm. She didn’t have a plan, no preconceived image to translate onto the canvas. Instead, she squeezed a dollop of deep, stormy indigo onto her palette, its rich hue mirroring the turmoil that had swirled within her for weeks. Then came cadmium red, a fiery declaration, and a hesitant touch of ochre, grounding, earthy. Her hand moved almost instinctively, the brush dancing across the canvas, laying down broad strokes of color, then refining them with smaller, more deliberate movements.
