The sterile glow of the laptop screen was a stark contrast to the warm, lived-in chaos of his apartment. Casey sat hunched over the keyboard, the rhythmic click-clack of the keys a lonely sound in the pre-dawn quiet. Outside, the city was stirring, a low hum of traffic beginning to build, but inside, in the sanctuary of his study, the only sound was the quiet war of his own thoughts. He was supposed to be working, poring over spreadsheets and projections, the usual balm for any restless energy. But his gaze kept drifting to the blank email draft, a digital abyss that mirrored the one he felt widening within him.

He typed. "Carol," he began, then backspaced. Too formal. "Hey, you," he tried, then cringed. Too casual, too familiar, when familiarity felt like a luxury he’d forfeited. He chewed on his lip, the familiar scent of stale coffee and ambition clinging to him. He was good at this, at numbers, at strategy, at building things that could be measured and quantified. But this? This was an entirely different kind of architecture, one made of fragile emotions and unspoken needs, and he was woefully underqualified.

He scrolled through his phone, past her contact photo – that silly selfie from their last vacation, her eyes crinkled at the corners, a laugh caught mid-air. It felt like a lifetime ago. He remembered the warmth of her hand in his, the easy rhythm of their breathing as they walked along the beach. Now, the silence between them was a chasm, and he didn’t know how to bridge it.
