The bell above the door of "The Daily Grind" gave a cheerful little jingle as Carol pushed it open, a sound that felt both familiar and slightly foreign. It had been ages since she’d last sought refuge in this cozy haven, the scent of roasted beans and warm pastries a comforting balm against the gnawing uncertainty that had become her constant companion. She ordered her usual – a large latte, extra shot, with a whisper of cinnamon – and found her favorite corner booth, the one with the slightly lopsided cushion that perfectly molded to her form.
She watched the morning bustle unfold, the quick exchanges between baristas and regulars, the quiet hum of conversations. It was a world that continued, unbothered by the seismic shifts happening within her own. She traced the condensation ring her cup left on the worn wooden table, a familiar ritual that used to bring a sense of calm, but now felt like a marker of time slipping away, each drop a tiny reminder of the days she was supposed to be using to… what, exactly?
