The scent of lemon polish and old paperbacks clung to the air in her childhood bedroom, a comforting, familiar perfume that was both a balm and a gentle ache. Carol traced the faded floral pattern on the wallpaper, a design she’d stared at for countless hours as a girl, concocting elaborate fantasies and dreaming of futures. Now, the fantasies felt distant, the futures uncertain. The silence of the house, usually a welcome respite from the city’s hum, felt vast and hollow. She’d expected the quiet, of course, had even sought it out, but the sheer, unadulterated *emptiness* of it was a physical presence, pressing in on her.
Her mother, Eleanor, entered with a tray bearing two steaming mugs of Earl Grey and a plate of ginger snaps. Her movements were fluid, unhurried, a stark contrast to the frantic energy Carol had been wrestling with since leaving Casey’s apartment. Eleanor placed the tray on the small, antique writing desk, her gaze soft and knowing as it met Carol’s.
“Tea, darling,” Eleanor said, her voice a low, melodious hum. “And something to ward off the chill. It’s a bit nippy out there today.”
