The air in her childhood bedroom felt thick with the scent of lavender and dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunbeams. Carol traced the worn floral pattern of the duvet, a familiar landscape that had once cradled her dreams and now offered a strange, hollow comfort. It had been three days since she’d last seen Casey, three days since they’d uttered those impossibly difficult words, “Let’s take some time.” The silence in her parents’ house, usually a balm, now pressed in on her, amplifying the quiet ache in her chest. She’d unpacked her suitcase, arranged her toiletries in the familiar bathroom, and now… now what?

Her gaze drifted to the corner of the room, to the old wooden chest tucked beneath the eaves. It was a repository of her past, a Pandora’s Box of forgotten treasures and adolescent angst. A flicker of curiosity, a tiny ember in the ashes of her recent desolation, nudged her forward. She knelt before it, the wood cool beneath her fingers, and lifted the heavy lid.

Inside, a riot of colors and textures greeted her. Old sketchbooks, their pages brittle with age, lay nestled beside tubes of acrylic paint, their caps stubbornly sealed. A box of charcoal pencils, their tips worn smooth by years of use, lay beside a half-finished clay sculpture, its form still vaguely recognizable as a leaping dolphin. And there, at the very bottom, beneath a tangle of dried flowers and faded ribbons, were her brushes. A collection of them, varying in size and shape, their bristles stiff and neglected.
