Carol sat at her mother’s kitchen table, the morning sun warming her face, a half-finished cup of tea growing cold beside her. The quiet hum of the refrigerator, the distant chirping of birds, the gentle rhythm of Eleanor’s breathing as she read the newspaper – it was all a testament to a life lived at a different pace, a pace Carol had lately forgotten. She had been filling her days with a kind of busywork, a desperate attempt to replicate the structure of her life with Casey, to pretend that the space he’d left wasn't a gaping chasm. But the charade was becoming exhausting.
“Mom,” Carol began, her voice a little shaky, “I was thinking.”
Eleanor lowered her newspaper, her eyes, crinkled at the corners with years of laughter and love, met Carol’s. “That’s usually a good sign, dear.”
