Chapter 5
Mother's Song and Siblings' Soaring
Her mother's soothing song and her siblings' joyful flight gave Fiddle Dee Dee strength. Watching them soar with such delight, she took a deep breath, her little heart filled with a growing resolve to try.
The air thrummed with the unspoken promise of departure. Fiddle Dee Dee, nestled deep within the familiar comfort of her nest, felt a familiar tremor begin in her tiny chest, a hummingbird’s frantic beat against her ribs. Outside, her siblings, a flurry of downy feathers and boundless energy, tumbled and chirped, their wings already testing the currents, their eyes bright with the thrill of the impending journey. Their annual pilgrimage to Grandparents' Perch was a time of great joy, a grand unfolding of wings towards a destination woven with warmth and sweet berry pies. But for Fiddle Dee Dee, it was a chasm, a vast, terrifying blue that stretched further than her little bird imagination could encompass.
Mother Bird, her feathers the color of a twilight sky, perched on a branch nearby, her gaze soft yet steady. She began to sing, a melody that was more than just notes; it was a lullaby woven from patience and understanding. The song flowed like a gentle stream, washing over Fiddle Dee Dee’s anxieties, smoothing the rough edges of her fear. It spoke of the strength within, of the sky as a friend, not a foe, of the beauty that awaited beyond the edge of the nest. It was a song Fiddle Dee Dee had heard many times, a soothing balm, but today, as the grand flight loomed, it felt like a lifeline.
Her siblings, however, were less interested in mother’s gentle crooning and more eager to test their mettle. With a final, boisterous chorus of chirps, they launched themselves into the air. One by one, then two by two, they spiraled upwards, their small bodies catching the sunlight, their wings beating with a confidence that made Fiddle Dee Dee’s own feathers prickle with apprehension. They dipped and soared, tracing invisible patterns against the azure canvas, their joyous calls echoing down to the nest. Pip, the boldest, looped daringly close to a tall oak, his shadow a fleeting dance on the sun-dappled ground. Willow, with her delicate markings, performed a graceful ascent, her wings catching the light like stained glass. Their uninhibited delight was a spectacle, a vibrant tapestry of freedom that Fiddle Dee Dee watched with a mixture of longing and dread.
