Chapter 4
A Whisper of Wind, A Spark of Courage
During a practice hop, a gentle breeze playfully lifted Fiddle Dee Dee. For a fleeting moment, she felt a whisper of freedom, a tiny spark of courage igniting within her. It was a surprising, hopeful feeling.
Fiddle Dee Dee stood at the edge of the nest, her tiny claws gripping the woven twigs as if they were the last anchors in a world about to spin away. Below, the emerald carpet of leaves seemed to blur and waver, a dizzying mosaic that made her brave heart flutter like a trapped moth. Her mother’s gentle chirps, usually a melody of comfort, now seemed to echo with the vastness of the sky, a boundless blue canvas that held both promise and peril. Her siblings, a flurry of vibrant feathers, darted and swooped with an ease that stole her breath. They tumbled through the air like dandelion seeds caught in a playful gust, their joyous calls a symphony of freedom she couldn’t quite join.
“Come, little one,” Mother Bird’s voice was a soft lullaby, woven with the warmth of a thousand sunrises. “Just a hop. A small flutter to test your wings.”
Fiddle Dee Dee squeezed her eyes shut. She imagined the wind, a boisterous giant, snatching her up and flinging her into the dizzying expanse. The thought sent a shiver down her spine, a tiny tremor that ran from her beak to the tips of her tail feathers. Her wings felt heavy, reluctant, as if they remembered only the cozy confines of the nest, the safety of branches, the earth beneath her feet. The sky, with its endless horizons and whispering secrets, was a place for the bold, the fearless, the ones whose hearts beat with the rhythm of the wind.
