The air, once crisp and alive with the scent of pine and damp earth, now tasted of ash and a gnawing unease. Connor stood at the edge of the campsite, his gaze fixed on the roiling, unnatural glow painting the horizon. Flicker, usually a whirlwind of happy energy, was pressed against his leg, a low, guttural rumble vibrating in his chest. The dog’s hackles were raised, his ears swiveling, catching sounds Connor couldn't even begin to perceive. Bauer, his weathered face etched with a familiar gravity, stood beside them, his gnarled hand resting on Flicker’s broad head.

“It’s worse than I feared,” Bauer murmured, his voice a low rasp. “The Blight… it’s not just burning the trees, Connor. It’s feeding.”

Connor nodded, his jaw tight. The ranger’s words echoed the chilling sensation that had settled deep in his gut since the first tendrils of smoke had appeared. This wasn’t a wildfire born of lightning or carelessness. This was something ancient, something *wrong*. He looked down at Flicker, who let out a soft whine, nudging his hand with his wet nose. The dog’s intuition, always sharp, was now a palpable thrum of distress.
