The sterile air of the containment unit did little to soothe the gnawing anxiety in my gut. Sarah Chen, her face a mask of professional detachment, moved with a practiced grace that belied the chaos I knew was churning beneath the surface. We were in the heart of the facility, a place designed for containment, not for revelations. The hum of machinery was a constant, oppressive drone, a lullaby for impending doom.

“You’ve seen enough, Riley,” she said, her voice clipped, devoid of any emotion. It was the same tone she’d used when she’d first cornered me in that alley, a predator assessing its prey. But something had shifted. The cold certainty in her eyes had been replaced by a flicker of something else, something I’d been searching for since that first cryptic message landed in my inbox. Doubt.

I leaned against the cool metal of a reinforced door, the tremor in my hands a betrayal of my outward composure. “Enough to know that whatever Thorne is planning, it’s not a reset. It’s an extermination.” The word hung in the air, heavy with the weight of Dr. Reed’s terrified whispers and the chilling evidence I’d gathered. A manufactured pandemic. A culling. All under the guise of salvation.
