The air in the sterile conference room felt thick enough to chew, a palpable residue of fear and ozone. My hand, slick with sweat, gripped the edge of the polished table. Across from me, bathed in the cool, impersonal glow of the projector screen, sat Marcus Thorne. He was exactly as Dr. Reed had described him, and yet, so much more. The charisma wasn’t a veneer; it was a force, emanating from him like heat from a furnace, drawing you in, making you lean closer, even as every instinct screamed to run. His eyes, a startlingly clear shade of blue, held a disconcerting blend of weariness and absolute conviction.

"Mr. Riley," Thorne began, his voice a low baritone, smooth as aged whiskey, "it's a pleasure to finally meet you in person. Though, I confess, I had hoped our introduction would be under less… adversarial circumstances."

I managed a tight smile. "The circumstances are hardly my preference, Mr. Thorne. Though I’ll admit, the invitation was rather intriguing. 'The Architects' and their grand design. It sounds like something out of a pulp novel."
