The static crackled, a foul omen before the silence. The image of Dr. Reed, her face a mask of desperate urgency, flickered and died. Sarah’s voice, amplified by the speakers, dissolved into a high-pitched whine, then nothing. Just the dead air and the blinking cursor on my monitor, a mocking testament to my failure. I slammed my fist onto the desk, the impact jarring my bones. Futile. Every single bit of it felt utterly, devastatingly futile.
