Chapter 7
Reaper's Watch
Jack's loyal German Shepherd, Reaper, is more than a pet; he's a silent guardian. His keen senses are often Jack's first line of defense against unseen threats in the royal compound.
Reaper, a magnificent German Shepherd with a coat the color of a twilight desert and eyes that held the wisdom of ancient stars, was Jack’s shadow. He wasn't merely a pet; he was an extension of Jack’s own senses, a furry, four-legged sentinel whose keen nose and sharp ears could detect a whisper of danger before it even materialized. The weight of the shepherd, combined with the tactical gear Jack habitually wore even within the relative safety of the royal compound – the FN SCAR-H slung low, the M4A1 a comforting presence across his chest, the heavier rifles a silent promise on his back, and the Glock 19 a familiar heft on his thigh – was a considerable burden. Yet, Jack moved with the practiced ease of a man who had long ago integrated the weight of his responsibilities into his very being. Reaper, too, carried his own formidable presence, a solid muscle of loyalty and protective instinct, his own harness a testament to his training.
The sprawling royal compound, a labyrinth of opulent courtyards, shaded alcoves, and whispering fountains, was usually a place of serene beauty. But for Jack, it was a battlefield of a different kind, a constant dance between the mundane duties of a husband and father, and the ever-present threat of the world he belonged to. Reaper’s low growl, a rumble deep in his chest, was often the first indicator that something was amiss, a subtle shift in the compound’s usual symphony of sounds.
This afternoon, Reaper’s ears had twitched, his head lifting from his paws as he lay sprawled beside Jack on a shaded terrace overlooking a meticulously manicured garden. The scent of jasmine hung heavy in the air, a deceptive sweetness that masked the potential for venom. Jack, his blue eyes scanning the perimeter with an almost imperceptible tension, knew better than to dismiss Reaper’s unease. The dog’s instincts were honed by years of training, years of sniffing out threats that human eyes might miss.
