The desert air, usually a dry balm, felt heavy with unspoken anxieties. Jack Lennox stood on the palace balcony, the pre-dawn chill doing little to penetrate the layers of his meticulously constructed life. Below, the sprawling grounds of the royal compound were bathed in the cool, artificial glow of security lights, a stark contrast to the ancient, star-dusted canvas above. Reaper, a solid mass of muscle and unwavering loyalty at his side, let out a low rumble, his senses picking up on the subtle shifts in the environment that Jack himself had learned to anticipate.

“Easy, boy,” Jack murmured, his hand resting on the German Shepherd’s broad head. Reaper’s fur, usually pristine, bore the faint scent of dust and the metallic tang of the rifle oil he’d meticulously applied just hours before. The FN SCAR-H, a familiar weight slung across his back, felt like an extension of his own body, a constant reminder of the life he led when the silken robes of domesticity were shed.

His comms unit crackled to life, a discreet chirp against the quiet hum of the night. “Angel, status report,” a voice, clipped and professional, echoed in his ear. It was Sergeant Major Dubois, his second-in-command, a man whose loyalty was as ironclad as his own.
