Chapter 18
Reaper's Alert
During a quiet evening, Reaper barks insistently, sensing an intruder. Jack's professional instincts kick in, preparing him for an imminent confrontation.
The air in the royal palace was thick with an artificial stillness, a quiet that felt more like a held breath than genuine peace. Reaper’s ears swiveled, his head lifting slightly, his gaze fixed on a point beyond the heavy oak door of their private chambers. The growl intensified, a warning that vibrated through the floorboards.
“What is it, boy?” Jack murmured, his voice low, laced with an immediate shift in tone. The paternal affection was still there, but beneath it, a steely edge had begun to sharpen.
