Dreams of the Ground

Nights are filled with dreams of solid earth, of running, of familiar faces. He wakes to the rustling leaves, the cold reality of his perch. These dreams fuel his desire to escape, but also highlight the peace he's found amongst the branches.

The night was a velvet cloak, embroidered with a million distant stars, yet it offered no comfort. Sleep, when it came, was a treacherous descent, a phantom limb reaching for the solid, unyielding earth. Gilles dreamt of dust motes dancing in sunbeams that slanted through his bedroom window, of the worn, familiar grain of the wooden floor beneath his bare feet. He dreamt of running, his legs pumping with an ease he hadn’t realized he’d lost until it was snatched away in slumber. He felt the cool kiss of dew-kissed grass on his ankles, the satisfying thud of his own footsteps on a path that led nowhere but forward.

Then, the faces. Not the blurred, indifferent masks of the villagers, but the fleeting, familiar contours of his mother’s smile, the gruff but gentle nod of his father’s head. They were phantoms too, conjured by a yearning so deep it ached in his bones, yet they felt more real than the rough bark that pressed against his back. He reached out, his dream-fingers brushing against something soft, something yielding. A pillow? A familiar blanket?

A sharp crackle, the brittle sound of a dry twig snapping, ripped him from the embrace of his slumber. His eyes snapped open, the starlight no longer a gentle balm but a cold, indifferent witness. The velvet cloak of night had dissolved, replaced by the stark, unforgiving grey of pre-dawn. His limbs, so agile in his dreams, felt heavy and stiff, ensnared by the unyielding reality of his arboreal prison. The rough bark was no longer a comforting texture, but a constant, abrasive reminder of his predicament.
