The wind, once a playful whisper through the nascent leaves, had become a constant companion, a restless spirit weaving through the impossibly tall branches of my world. It was a breath, a sigh, a murmur that carried with it the faint echoes of a life I had once known, a life that now felt as distant as the stars. Sometimes, carried on its invisible currents, I could almost discern the phantom sounds of the village below. A snatch of laughter, a fragment of conversation, the distant clang of a blacksmith’s hammer – these were the ghosts of my past, spectral reminders of the world I had so foolishly, so defiantly, left behind.

It was in these moments, when the wind rustled the highest leaves, that I felt a peculiar kinship with this ancient giant. We were both prisoners, in a way. The tree, rooted to the earth, its branches reaching for a sky it could never touch. And I, tethered to its mighty trunk, my gaze fixed on a horizon that seemed perpetually out of reach.
