Table of contents
- 1The Whispering CrownGilles, tired of being called a 'fooly', climbs the tallest tree to prove them wrong. The ascent is arduous, the air thins, and the ground recedes. He reaches the top, exhilarated, but a chilling realization dawns: he cannot descend. The world below shrinks.
- 2First Leaf, First FearDay one. The initial triumph fades, replaced by a gnawing fear. Hunger pangs begin. Gilles examines his surroundings, noting the rough bark, the sparse leaves. He finds a few edible berries, a meager start to his unprecedented ordeal. The vast sky offers no comfort.
- 3The Bark ChronicleGilles begins to scratch marks into the bark, a primitive calendar. He observes the patterns of sunlight, the flight of birds. His initial panic subsides, giving way to a quiet determination. He starts to notice the subtle language of the tree itself.
- 4A Glimpse of WonderHigh above, nestled amongst the densest leaves, Gilles spots something unusual. A glint of metal? A strange shape? It's too far to discern clearly, but it sparks a flicker of curiosity, a potential mystery to occupy his isolated mind. Hope, a fragile thing, takes root.
- 5Whispers on the WindThe wind becomes his constant companion, carrying faint sounds from the village. Laughter, distant voices – reminders of the life he's left behind. He wonders if they miss him, or if they've already forgotten the 'sukkeltje' who climbed too high.
- 6Sustenance from AboveGilles learns to identify more edible plants and insects. He discovers a small, steady drip of water from a hollow in a branch. Resourcefulness blossoms in the face of necessity. The tree, once a prison, begins to offer its grudging bounty.
- 7The Sky's Shifting CanvasHe watches the sun rise and set, painting the sky in hues he'd never truly appreciated. Storms rage, testing his resolve. He learns to find shelter within the thickest boughs, feeling a strange kinship with the ancient wood.
- 8Dreams of the GroundNights are filled with dreams of solid earth, of running, of familiar faces. He wakes to the rustling leaves, the cold reality of his perch. These dreams fuel his desire to escape, but also highlight the peace he's found amongst the branches.
- 9The Object of IntrigueGilles focuses on the mysterious object. He sketches it in the dirt of his makeshift perch. Is it a tool? A relic? His imagination runs wild, weaving tales of its origin. It becomes a symbol of the unknown, a challenge to his intellect.
- 10A Poetic ReckoningHe starts to verbalize his thoughts, his observations turning into a quiet, internal poetry. The isolation strips away pretense, revealing a depth he never knew he possessed. His journal, etched in bark and memory, grows.
- 11The Watcher in the LeavesHe notices small creatures – insects, birds – that call the tree home. He learns their routines, their habits. He feels less alone, observing this miniature ecosystem, a silent participant in the tree's life.
- 12Echoes of the PastHe imagines others who might have climbed this tree, perhaps long ago. Did they face similar struggles? Did they find answers? The tree feels ancient, a silent witness to countless stories.
- 13The Riddle of the RootGilles contemplates the base of the tree. Is there a hidden path, a secret entrance? He longs to explore the roots, but the distance is insurmountable. The mystery remains tantalizingly out of reach.
- 14A Flicker of UnderstandingHe starts to understand the tree's 'language' – the creak of branches, the rustle of leaves. It's not just wood and foliage; it's a living entity with its own rhythms and secrets.
- 15The Weight of DaysThe 30th day. A milestone. He's survived a month. The initial shock has worn off, replaced by a quiet resilience. He feels a change within himself, a growing sense of self-reliance that surprises even him.
- 16The Unseen ObserverGilles feels a presence, not of animals, but something more profound. A sense that the tree itself is watching, testing him. This feeling is unnerving yet strangely comforting, a silent acknowledgment of his struggle.
- 17The Object's SecretHe notices a subtle shift in the mysterious object. A faint light? A movement? It seems to react to something. His focus intensifies, convinced it holds a key, not just to escape, but to understanding.
- 18The Thirst for KnowledgeHis desire to prove himself has transformed. It's no longer about the villagers, but about understanding himself and the mysteries surrounding him. The tree is his classroom, the object his final exam.
- 19The Final AscentAs the 74th day dawns, Gilles feels a new strength. He looks towards the mysterious object, no longer with fear, but with purpose. He knows he must make one final, daring attempt to reach it, whatever the cost.
- 20The Fall and the FlightThe climax arrives. Gilles makes his move towards the object. Whether it leads to freedom, revelation, or a final, daunting challenge, his perspective has irrevocably shifted. The 'sukkeltje' is no more.

Supernatural events or occurrences were nothing out of the ordinary to Maiden, as she walked and talked with God always in the spiritual realm as far back as she could remember. And being born within a spiritually and culturally rich nation of people that were "close to the Earth," such as Maiden's own Native American people, it wasn't unusual for any of them to nonchalantly begin sharing spiritual experiences amongst each other or even with outsiders. She knew the events were real. They HAD to be. How else could she explain the presence that she felt late at night not only in her mind, but all over her body, weaving his way inside and outside of her most delicate and tender completely intimate places?
