The sweet, sticky scent of mashed elderberries clung to Sammy like a second skin. It was a victorious aroma, a testament to her cunning, her tenacity, and the sheer, unadulterated power of a well-placed berry chase. She hovered, wings a blur of vibrant emerald, above her beloved meadow. The sun, usually a cheerful companion, seemed to beam with extra pride today, illuminating the dew-kissed blades of grass and the shy wildflowers peeking from their slumber. It was quiet. Blissfully, wonderfully quiet. No rumbling snores, no earth-shattering sneezes, just the gentle hum of bees and the whisper of the wind through the leaves.

Sammy puffed out her tiny chest, a minuscule puff of defiance against the vastness of her achievement. Bartholomew the dragon was gone. Vanquished. Driven from her territory by a fairy barely larger than his nostril. She’d done it. Her temper, that fiery, untamed thing that usually got her into more trouble than it was worth, had finally served a noble purpose. It had fueled her, sharpened her wit, and propelled her through a series of events that, in retrospect, felt more like a fever dream than reality.

She’d started with glitter bombs, a dazzling display of fairy fury that had, to Bartholomew’s credit, merely made him sneeze a little harder, showering her with a fine mist of sparkly dragon dander. Then came the tickle fight, a desperate attempt to rouse him from his nap with sheer annoyance. He’d merely grumbled, a sound like distant thunder, and shifted his colossal weight, nearly flattening her entire wing in the process. It was a near-fatal miscalculation, one that had left her bruised, battered, and contemplating the futility of fighting a creature whose primary defense was an unshakeable need for sleep.
