“Elara,” she began, her voice soft but firm, “you haven’t slept properly in days. You’re jumpy, you’re distracted, and frankly, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.” She gestured with her own mug, a cheerful yellow one adorned with a grumpy cat. “And that’s *before* you started talking about cryptic messages and mysterious men who appear out of nowhere.”
I stirred my tea, the spoon clinking against the ceramic. “It’s not just a mysterious man, Anya. It’s… a pattern. A connection.” The words felt flimsy, inadequate to convey the weight of the whispers and shadows that clung to me. How could I explain the unsettling feeling of being watched, the déjà vu that struck with the force of a physical blow, the way Rhys Thorne’s eyes seemed to hold an ancient knowledge that both terrified and mesmerized me?
